Roy Lichtenstein

Roy Lichtenstein was a very sophisticated pop artist. His work was drawn on the popular culture for style and subject matter. He used every day objects to make his own style from comic books, advertisements, TV etc. Lichtenstein not only did artwork on pop art but one of his first galleries was based on cubist interpretations of other artists. After hosting this gallery Lichtenstein later started on a new style, featuring heavy outlines and benday dots to add tone in printing. This is when Lichtenstein started his work on pop art. One of the most famous pieces of work Lichtenstein made during these early years of his career was a piece of artwork called “Oh, Jeff…I Love You Too…But…” This piece of work was based on romantic comic books. Lichtenstein continued in this trend for much of his career with a comic strip style in his work but later he extended his work into sophisticated and provocative ideas on art and popular culture.

For these images, I have changed my photos into a Lichtenstein inspired piece of artwork. This kind of style by Lichtenstein was very different, and I wanted to be able to change my photos into his kind of style of work. Two of the photos I have used line art to give it that comic book look followed by using half tone shading which gives the picture its character, and then finally adding colour into the image so it looks comic book like. On the other image, I have just used the half tone shading where it gives a different kind of Lichtenstein style of work, and then finally adding colour onto the image. The images that I have made are from the style from Lichtenstein’s piece of work called, ‘Drowning Girl.’
